LightWave [8] has many interesting tools for modeling and animation. One particular tool that has been in LightWave for awhile that I recently discovered is the effector tool. This feature will give you the ability to deform your objects without setting up endomorphs or bones. Let’s take a quick look at how to use this feature. 1. Let’s start with a new scene in Layout. 2. Load your object into the new scene. In this scenario I chose this cool fat cat, modeled by William Vaughan, for the demonstration. 3. Add a null to the scene ( Create Tab/Add-Null ), and name it. For this exercise I named my null “Effector” 4. Select your object that you want to be affected by Effector. In my scene it is the cat. 5. Go to the Object Properties panel/Deform button/Add Displacement button and select “Effector”. Open Properties window. ( Double click or right click open properties) 6. On the object prefix type your null’s name. NOTE: Keep an eye out for lower, upper case. It will not work if the name is not exactly the same. Solid Core Radius is how much geometry is going to be affected, keep in mind the size of the object; and Fall of Distance is how far is going to fade in distance from the null. 7. Effector shape has 2 options: Point and Planar. Point acts like a “ball” deforming geometry Planar acts like a “wall” in the axis you choose. Effector is a nice option for animation without the need for morphs or bone influence. Parent the effector to any object in the scene and make some cool animation effects in just minutes.
