OK, last time I showed you how to use the LATHE command to do the usual fare and make a common wine glass. Then we saw how to use it to create a picture frame. Here's another quick way that the LATHE command can be very useful. This tutorial will show you how to lay down just a few points and turn them into an empty room complete with floor and ceiling molding. Let's start off by firing up modeler. We'll be working in the BACK view for this one. From the CREATE tab, go down the menu and select the POINT button. Over towards the right hand side of the BACK view, lay down nine points so that they look like this: Now, select the first 4 points starting from the top-most point. On the menu, select the MAKE CURVE button and choose MAKE OPEN CURVE. You'll see that those points have been used to create a nice smooth spline curve. Now select the very last point in this curve and the next one below it and create another open curve. Again, select the last one in this curve and then the next three after it to create the bottom molding curve. Finally, select the last point in this curve and then select the final remaining point and create one more open curve. You should have something that looks like this: Open your NUMERIC window by pressing the "n" key. Now, under the MODIFY tab select the LATHE tool (let's use the keyboard shortcut; Shift+L) Align the cursor with the middlemost point and drag. Before dropping the tool, change the number of sides to 4. Drop the tool. Make sure that the polygons are facing inwards and VIOLA..... you now have a room with molding at both the ceiling and floor. Now get busy building some furniture, the room looks pretty bare! Download Source File Here Tony Carretti is a freelance 3D artist.
