LATHE - NOUN: A machine for shaping a piece of material, such as wood or metal, by rotating it rapidly along its axis while pressing against a fixed cutting or abrading tool. When we think of lathing something, the first thing that usually comes to mind is a round symmetrical object like a vase or glass. What the LATHE tool in modeler actually does is take a cross section that is made up of a flat polygon and spins it around a point of your choosing to create a 3D shape. For example, let's create the classic wine glass. Start off by firing up modeler. In the CREATE tab, go down the toolbar until you reach the PEN tool. In the BACK viewport, go ahead and create the 2D shape that will represent the cross section of our fancy glass. Here's what you may come up with: Drop the pen tool by tapping the SPACE bar or by clicking in the gray area at the bottom of the toolbar button. OK now we're ready to lathe our cross section. Click on the MULTIPLY tab along the top and then click on the LATHE button in the toolbar. The shortcut for LATHE is (SHIFT+L). You can see that your cursor now looks like a small arrow rotating around a small beam. The arrow actually is a representation of the direction of the lathe. Since you created your cross section in the BACK view, use this same view to LATHE your object. Place the cursor at the edge of the polygon that represents the very center of your glass. Click and drag in a downward direction. You can now see your object being lathed in real time. If it looks like the object is inside out, don't worry. Simply drag upwards. It takes a few times to get the feel for it, but soon it'll be second nature. OK, after you're done creating all the wonderful things that might come to mind.... (like a bowling pin, flower pot, baseball bat, Liberty Bell....... etc... I'll show you another way that the LATHE tool might come in handy. Create a new object by clicking FILE/NEW OBJECT In the BACK view port, using the PEN tool, create a polygon that looks something like this: Now, if you don't already have it showing, open the Numeric Options Panel by clicking on MODELER/WINDOWS/NUMERIC OPTIONS. This window allows you to make fine adjustments to whatever tool you are using. Click on the LATHE button and you'll see that the heading to the NUMERIC PANEL changes to reflect the tool that is currently being used. Zoom out a little so that the polygon is in the right half of the BACK viewport. Place your cursor to the left of your polygon in the BACK viewport and drag. Before dropping the tool, go over to the NUMERIC panel and reduce the number of sides to 4. Drop the tool and see what you've got..... a picture frame. Rotate it 45 degrees in the Y axis and the move the points until you've got the dimensions that please you. All you have to do now is create a flat plane inside the frame to map a wonderful work of art to... like this! By changing the number of sides, you can create very many different shapes and objects. Play with it and don't be afraid to experiment! Tony Carretti is a freelance 3D artist.
